I was feeling oddly gushy (or gooshy, even) yesterday. I have no idea why, except maybe because I got to buy cheese, and work on my novel, and hang out with girls, and drink alcohol, and shoot pool, and gab, and then cuddle with my boyfriend. It doesn't really get much better than that, I suppose.

Today's question is: If you have to move out by the end of the month, and can't move in till the first, what the hell are you supposed to do in the meantime?

legally, you can leave all your shit there until the last day of the month, uhaul or no. it's just that one night that you really have to worry about where you're sleeping.

I don't know your landlord, but unless they have a vendetta against you or are unreasonable on a near sociopathic level they'll be happy to let you stay an extra night or two, especially if you can demonstrate that you already have most if not all of your stuff packed and shipped out.

My understanding is that almost any landlord will allow you to begin moving stuff INTO a new rental a day or two early, also. You need to ask. I put it into my lease agreement when I moved into my current office, for example. So, as was said above, it would just be a matter of sleeping somewhere else from midnight to 8am -- or of just not sleeping that night at all.

This is how it needs to go, as a professional mover... I know.

Typically, when you are faced with this... you should try to work out a smooth transition to your new place by asking ahead of time when you can move your things in. Generally, most places that you are moving into need time to CLEAN and paint (as it is required by law in most states). Likewise, your present landlord will have to clean after you leave as well and depending on how long you stayed, paint. There are few exceptions in these situations.

However, if the situation is as you put it - you will have to move everything out into a storage unit - then back out when the new place is ready there is no other way around it. You MIGHT be able to leave it in the UHaul, but for safety and security reasons I'd highly recommend against doing so.

This was a common situation with the housing in Boston for college students. Basically, everyone ended up moving the same day with the current occupants moving stuff into their UHaul or the yard while the new occupants slowly filled up rooms as the old occupants were vacating. Mark everything as belonging to you.
