How can a movie based on a ride at Disneyland be good while a movie based on an Alan Moore comic be bad?

Two words: Johnny Depp.

Perhaps because XLG is loosely based on the comic.

LXG has a lot to live up to; Moore's a good writer who writes complex things and any attempt to make that go to the big screen is going to fall short on SOME level. I mean, fuck, compare FROM HELL the Depp movie to FROM HELL the huge black and white book that Moore wrote. Leaving out all the Masonic Magickal (spelled with a K for extra Goth-points!) stuff, they left out a lot of the intregue that the original story as written had -- not that they had a whole lot of choice; filming it as written would probably mean either a four hour movie or a Miniseries. It's one of the reasons I would never hope for a WATCHMEN movie (although Terry Gilliam expressed interest in filming it; how cool would that be?)

Whereas Pirates of the Carribbeeaann essentially has no story. Anything that is an improvement on the Disney ride is an improvement. So PotC has nowhere to go but up, and LXG had to either be dumbed down and cut down a bit or be made overly complex for most audiences and about a half hour longer.

All that said, my biggest beef with LXG was it's editing. All the fight scenes were dizzying in their editing from one punch between 2 characters and then two others fighting etc....that and the story changes were kinda weak, but not as God-Awful as e.g., The Matrix Reloaded.

I have the comic myself but I know you can find it on bittorrent sites like e.g. filesoup dot com etc in comic book reader format.
