Jun. 6th, 2003 04:55 pm* Wow, that abortion debate got a lot of comments.
* Personally I think birth control should be free and distributed, as should abortions.
* To pay for all this, eliminate the tax credit for children. All children, not just poor ones.
* I love people who don't get correlation vs. causality.
* cheese = morphine?

They're from lefty/liberal sources, sure, but they're still factually relevant.
And, if we're bothering to listen to campaign promises here, I'll have to remind you that Bush also said the job of the US Military wasn't nation building. And Clinton promised healthcare in '92. So much for campaign promises.
For those of you who watched the Senate Debate and ended up agreeing with it, I'll mention that every single witness that was up there had to be approved by a committee that's dominated by Republicans. It's one of Amp's (from Alas, a Blog) beefs; the other side was simply not presented. So, of course it'll look like there's overwhelming evidence if you don't show the other side.
Anyway, a partial birth abortion ban is pretty unconstitutional if it doesn't hold a health clause. And of the 31 states who've tried to ban partial birth abortions in the past, every one of those that've come up against the courts has failed against the the rigors of Constitutionality, and have been declared illegal, unenforcable. Even with the 5-4 conservative split in the Supreme Court, this won't hold its own.

Date: 2003-06-06 05:25 pm (UTC)it's weird, cause i remember researching abortion debate stuff a few years ago for a class in college, and reading all the 'standard arguments.' so seeing them come to life in that thread was really neat and almost sad at the same time :(
here's the thing. it blows my mind that a lot of women can't afford the time or money or inconvenience to go pick up some fucking condoms or even ask their doctors about birth control pills, yet having a baby could cost them their pride, their life savings, even their lives. it bugs me that some women are more concerned about what their boyfriend thinks and how they can keep him than about learning and implementing very basic safe-sex procedures into their nightly necking routine.
this doesn't even begin to cover all the women who get pregnant, and i know there are a lot of cases where the woman really doesn't have a say. but there are so many people like that out there! where are their priorities?
(i guess i could ask the same of people who think that a potential person has an equal or greater right to life than a person who is already alive. i mean, c'mon people. this isn't terminator 2 here. these fetuses aren't going to save mankind. ;P)
god i'm inflammatory. sorry :/
