top five romantic comedies, with or without Meg Ryan:

  1. When Harry Met Sally

  2. Addicted to Love

  3. Bridget Jones' Diary

  4. French Kiss

  5. The Cutting Edge

Steve and I watched the last one today, and American Psycho as well. Haha, that movie just gets me every time. "Learning to love yourself IS the greatest love of all."

(BP's thirtieth birthday tomorrow. Heading out shortly for drinks and skankery.)

I used to watch The Cutting Edge like once a week.
That was back when I was an Ice Skater and thought "it could happen.."
that list is just great.

Oh you should see Like Water for Chocolate. When Harry Met Sally is one of those movies that when I catch it on TV I can't turn it off. I'm like "oh its 1/3 done but there's a great scene coming up... i'll just watch it until that..." But sure enough I'm there to the end.

wait, but...

I've seen it. I wouldn't really call it a comedy.

Oh doh! You wanted romantic comedies vs just romantic movies.

Actually I hate 99% of romantic comedies. Those listed are not only the top five, but they're the only ones worth seeing.

1. Return To Me
2. High Fidelity
3. What Women Want
4. The Mexican
5. Singles

That'd have to be my top five, though I think #3-5 kind of fluxuate a little. And I'd give an honorable mention to My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but the presence of a boy-band fuck-up whose last name (Fatone) also is the description of his role in the band (Fat one) axes it from the top 5; despite the fact his role is minor, the fact is that he is in the movie.

I didn't see What Women Want, and Return to Me was too sickly sweet. The rest, I wouldn't really call "romantic comedies." Or can I call Fight Club a romantic comedy?

i haven't seen 2 or 4, but i think your list could be quite comprehensive. like you, i'm sort of cynical about R.C.s, but then my boy showed me when harry met sally and i loved it. it is genuinely funny. and a lot sexxier than i thought it would be.

one question though, would you consider woody allen movies to be R.C.s? cos annie hall could definitely slot in there somewhere.

Hm, not really. I mean the MAIN thing about the formula is a happy ending (for any comedy except dark ones), and Annie Hall was not a happy ending.

I haven't seen Singles recently enough to defend it, but I'll stoutly defend Mexican/High Fidelity, in the sense that they are comedies that deal with relationships involving love and the inherent uncertainty that comes with dating, when two people reach a point where their love has to be tested by extreme situations in order to determine if their love is viable or delusional. That's a romantic comedy to me.
