On Vox: that's it really.
Feb. 6th, 2008 12:14 pm- Sunshine, Danny Boyle's latest, is like a cross between 2001 and 28 Days Later. This is not really a good thing, as it's more like a splice with 90 minutes of the former and 30 of the later. Separately maybe ok, or if they had actually given some background instead of making it, as I said, more like a splice. Those 90 minutes are really good, though. The ship and crew are set up rather nicely. Some people have complained about the 1-dimensional characters, but I felt the ship was the most important character, and the crew merely aspects of it.
- Parable of the Talents, Octavia Butler's sequel to Parable of the Sower, is actually better than the first one. The first one was more of a setup, well-done but pretty dark and dreary. Both set in the near future where global warming and weather fuckups cause the USA to go to hell, along with various drugs and whatnot. The protagonist of both books is a young woman who creates a new religion, Earthseed, with the ultimate goal to leave Earth. It's very very soft/anthropologist SF, my favorite kind.
- Attempted to watch The Lion In Winter, but I had no idea it was 3 hours long or so. Regardless of that the first 90 minutes (pattern emerging!) are amazing, and Hepburn deserved that Oscar. Plus young Timothy Dalton is amazing. As is Anthony Hopkins.
- Going to Lake Chelan/Mission Ridge this weekend.
