marconi plays the mamba
May. 30th, 2003 09:42 amWent to the Henry Art Gallery with
xamichee yesterday evening. The installation currently there is pretty neat, although I'm not sorry I didn't "donate" to them, since, well, I'm kind of broke. The main thing is this big slanty room filled with an odd neon light that glows and fucks with your eyes. If you stare long enough you start to see the lizard king.
Afterwards we grilled steaks at his place then had cheesecake at Dilettante's. I was thinking of watching a movie with Steve, but apparently he dragged himself out of hisCiv 3 hole long enough to go out. So we met up with him and BP (who was back from a business trip) at Bluwater. And then to Merchant's Cafe, where they were having a "fashion show". These things are always overrated, though. If all the girls had been in bikinis, maybe that would have been something. I think only two of the girls were anything at all, and the hostess beat them both hands down. The drag queen was a little scary though. We kept quoting Austin Powers whenever we saw her. Heh.
It was too hot and crowded, and I was already in kind of a food coma - in addition the female bartenders poured weak drinks - so I wasn't really having a great time. And neither was anyone else. So to Contour we go... good times. As Always. I got another drink, even though I didn't really feel like I could consume any more liquids. It worked though. And I felt better for about five minutes, till I felt bad again, and went outside to chill out. Drank some water and started to feel human again, sobering up etc.
And then the funniest thing in the world happened. I got back from the bathroom and Steve was talking to two girls - one who was clearly drunk off her ass, the other who was just smiley - who'd just graduated from Duke. Woah. So we talked a little bit about the campus changes, the frats being kicked off West, freshman East, and Jane Gaines. Not that I know Jane Gaines from Adam but my friends were all in the film program and did - and the smiley girl had a film certificate. So that was kind of sweet. Bashing Durham of course never gets old.
I had to drive Steve home - he's got a rental at last - because he was still drunk by the time we left. Also dropped off BP - as soon as he was gone, I cranked up the 80s station. "Raspberry Beret" and "We Built This City." Steve was just conscious enough to sing along, and on the last leg I gave him a look. "OH SURE, I'M THE SIDEKICK DRIVING DRUNK BATMAN HOME. WHATEVER."
This morning I woke up feeling a little queasy. Damn post-nasal drip going down my esophagus. Usually I can hack it up, but I still had some food in my stomach. So that was ill-advised. Ugh. I think it's all better now, though.
