It's foggy today, mixed with rain. It's been sort of raining all week, but in a 60F way, which is almost pleasant, to me anyway. Almost warm enough to enjoy it. I mean, enjoy being in the wet. I like the weather in one sense, but physically have to admit it's not exactly pleasant having cold droplets on your skin. Where I grew up, it was pleasant, because otherwise it was 90F.
I started reading Virtual Mode by Piers Anthony during the road trip. It's something I read as a teen, when it came out, and the successive books in the Mode series too. Piers Anthony isn't exactly admired in the literati, but I think he does characterization pretty well. The Mode series takes place half on Earth and half in other fantasy places, but I prefer his Earth scenes. Same thing with the Incarnations series. I just don't think he does the adventure stuff that well, especially compared to the characters. (The opposite, I suppose, of JK Rowling.)
Is it worse or better to replace HP Fanfiction with Xanth novels? I downloaded a big archive of every Xanth novel in PDF form, and have been reading it the past week, skipping over some of the less interesting action scenes. (I like the first few books, but Ogre, Ogre is spectacularly weak because of these action scenes. Which is a shame because the character growth of Smash is pretty good.) I'm up to book seven, and I think it might be a better use of my time to read HP fanfic. Oh well.

Date: 2010-09-17 10:58 pm (UTC)Somewhere out there, Piers Anthony just felt a huge wave of shame wash over him, and he is questioning his life for the first time ever. It's about time!
I've been talking with a few different people about Xanth and Piers Anthony lately, and I'm not sure why. I wonder if there is some math equation that expresses exactly how long ago you have to have read most of his stuff before you can even start thinking about it again?
Most everything he has done is horrible, yet charming - but just not enough to give him a pass or file his work under "eh, it's just a fun read".
(Also I'm pretty sure it was Reg who handed me my first Xanth book in elementary school, which is probably some secret shame he doesn't want me sharing with anyone)

Date: 2010-09-18 02:37 am (UTC)I have to "have a knowledge of the Harry Potter films" for a job I'm applying for. *eyeroll* Idk if this mean I have to actually watch them or if I can go off my knowledge of the books.
Doctor Who fanfic has settled down a bit so now I've moved on to Sherlock.
And YES about the rain, I am loving it. Except the lack of someone to snuggle with. And my cat has deserted me for Randy. :(
