Public Enemies was just what I needed today: a 30s gangster movie by Michael Mann starring two awesome actors (and a lot of lesser-known good ones) in a freezing movie theater. Also, it made me want to reread Illuminatus!

Although I did complain that they shot the protagonist, thus blocking all routes for a sequel.

ack, I read your spoiler. no matter, by the time I get this movie on DVD, I'm sure I'll have heard from many sources.

I have by no means seen everything Depp has done, but I've never seen him give a bad performance.

it was more a joke. it's a fact that dillinger was gunned down in more or less cold blood by the FBI, but I think Bale was supposed to be the "hero." Who can tell really.

I'm sure I knew that somewhere in the deep recesses of my brain, but not common enough knowledge for me to actually be aware of. Besides, I take all of these supposedly historical movies as fiction anyway. Maybe 1 fact in 10 presented may actually be true.

well the dramatic bits are dramaticized of course, but the timing and shootouts (at least who died) and all are based on Fact.

in the Illuminatus trilogy there's a group called "John Dillinger Died For You" which is a reference to the FBI being dicks, basically.

But it is bizarre to see him do a decent performance in really bad films. Both The Ninth Gate and Sleepy Hollow were amazingly bad movies.

The Ninth Gate is one of the worst movies I've ever seen, but I found Sleepy Hollow entertaining. Of course, I read that Depp wanted to do the role with a big prosthetic nose on, and the producers wouldn't let him. His performance would have been that much better.

Illuminatus! is one of those books that just gets better with every rereading I think.

Why can't the bloody movie theaters be freezing in North Carolina? Movie theaters are *supposed* to be freezing. Bah. Humbug.
