I would have to say that 'echoes' by Pink Floyd is nearly a perfect masterpiece, but the middle bit with the screeching and all that kind of makes me want to stab Roger Waters in the eye.

really? I always found that to be very haunting and to give it a lot of needed space. AFAIK that's all dave gilmour btw --- if you listen to boots of the era (known in pink floyd trading circles as ROIO's if you wanna google) gilmour does a lot of that in his solos from other songs -- there's some BBC sessions where he does it on songs from Atom Heart Mother for e.g.

Oh... I have been high MANY TIMES listening to Echoes. Actually... I used to listen to the entire album it came off of (Meddle) whenever I was tripping balls. I dunno if this is one hundred percent true, but those screeching noises are meant to be whales made through a very complex synthesizer machine (hey... it was like 1971 when they made that album, they were still in their "experimental" phase by that point). I think that noise is what makes Echoes special. Another good Pink Floyd album you should probably listen to (or if you've already listened to it) that hasn't been stabbed in the throat by over-commercialism is "Animals". It's pretty out there if anything, and it came out between "Wish you were Here" and "The Wall".

"Animals" is my favorite Pink Floyd album. But I find all of their albums to be absolutely perfect, except for the ones put out after Roger Waters left the band. They shouldn't have even been allowed to call themselves "Pink Floyd" after that.

His solo albums are pretty fucking spectacular too. "Amused to Death" is one of my all-time favorites.

amen. I hate it when bands keep the same name after everyone but the singer leaves!
