On Vox: movie fun.

While completely sober this weekend, I watched two movies.

Volver

• The last Almodovar movie I saw was All About My Mother. Been a while, eh? I think I liked this one better, seemed a return to the forms of Women on the Verge and Flower of my Secret.
• The last thing I saw Penelope Cruz in was Vanilla Sky. She looks a lot better now. I hate to say "She looks like an actual woman" because that implies that people with small boobs don't count as women, but seriously, damn.
  
• The boobs actually are used as a framing device, along with a dead body, in a few shots. As usual, the colors and framing and everything was just gorgeous, beautifully shot.
• Oh yeah, the story wasn't bad either. As I said, return to form with lots of chicks in soap opera like situations.
• And besides Penelope it was good to see the really old school ladies of Almodovar films. I think I need to indulge in a few more when they're re-released soon.

The other movie was, believe it or not, 2001. Honestly haven't seen it since puberty, haven't remembered anything.

2001

Admittedly I wasn't really into the monkey dudes, but once that was over I was enthralled. (Since I was completely sober.) I kept rewinding the space ballet moments over and over again.

And then, HAL. Wow, I have not felt actual fear of an antagonist in a movie since - well, ok, since Kurt Russell in Death Proof, but you know, he was creepy the whole time even before we knew why. But HAL comes across as awesomely helpful and perfect until... he hits the psychotic mindset. And me personally, I am a lot more afraid of a nice AI going bad than a weird looking creep going bad.

And then the ending, which makes no sense even if completely sober. I kept picturing Kubrick - except I kept seeing him as Stanley Tucci. Anyway I kept wondering what process he was going through to get to that point.

The last Almodovar movie I saw was "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown".... In AP Spanish class.

Have you not seen Talk To Her? I like all of Almodovar's movies, but that one is my favorite.

Initially, I didn't like Volver at all. It was a bit too Shallow Grave at the beginning. But then it totally ended up working.
