Alcohol contains 7 kilocalories per gram, whereas fat contains 9 kilocalories per gram, and carbohydrates and proteins are 4 kilocalories per gram. Kilocalories are a measurement of how much energy, btw. So yeah, alcohol actually IS a source of energy, but it provides no essential nutrients. Most people do not use this energy when they consume so much of it and so it then becomes stored as fatty tissue for use as energy later. So yeah, alcohol can make you pretty fat. In rehab it was crazy how much weight the alcoholics lost over the course of 28 days!
