I sort of hate Steven Pinker, but it's pretty much obligatory for linguists.. his statements about language are often grossly oversimplified, if not overtly wrong. Basically he's known for distorting or leaving out facts that don't fit in the neat little package he makes of huge topics.
That said, I might enjoy some of his writings in areas where I'm not over-educated and don't really care how complete a picture he paints. He does do an excellent job of making scientific topics accessible.
