That is probably my most favorite book. He does well with A Clash Of Kings and A Storm of Swords also. But after reading A Game of Thrones(AGoT) while waiting for A Feast for Crows, I feel that it was the best so far.

I realized I had kept recalling the material in AGoT while reading the last two and thinking they were as good because of that foundation. However, they aren't as succinct. Don't get me wrong in thinking I'm trying to stray you away from the other books, because he does continue to deliver. He just delivers with a higher proportion of material in the last two. The forth book is so large he had to split the book in two. A Feast for Crows is part one of two books, the second will be A Dance of Dragons. Half the characters are in Feast and the other half will be in Dance. Huge!

I would agree that the series is strong because of the foundation he builds with AGoT. I'm about a quarter through A Storm of Swords right now and the story keeps on impressing me. Although, Laural's journal is not the place to be talking about things in the later books. :O

i had a really hard time getting into it, because there were just SO many characters that I couldn't really keep track of who was important or who was with what faction or whatever.

Yeah, I wouldn't dare give any content as the lines are blurred in my mind about what happened in which book. I was just trying to draw her in to read the rest in the series.

I did, too. In fact, I started AGoT right after reading Da Vinci Code, so the tempo change was extreme. However, after about six to eight chapters, I was hooked into the series and now can't wait for more. The re-read factor is pretty high because you can see where he was going after you know where it went, though you didn't see it on first read.

The series gets easier as time goes on. You get to understand who's really important by whether they have chapters written from their perspective or not (almost every important or interesting character does at one point or another). Also, Martin likes to kill people off, so the cast never gets too much larger even though he's introducing new characters all the time.

I need to re-read this. After I read, like, a dozen other books. I do recall that it was the best of the ones I'd read, though the second book is almost as strong. The third one... I probably needed to reread the first two books before diving into it so I gave a shit/knew what the fuck was going on.

There are times when I think the cast is too huge, and that someone spent too long on screenwriting, where the finished product is one where each character has a distinct actor tied to it, fixing a face and making confusion less likely. And sometimes the "life = nasty, brutish, short and really fucking miserable" gets a little old. Sunshine and light in perpetuity is bullshit, but after the second book, I was looking for some variation in tone, but that could just be me. Maybe I didn't read closely enough.

That said, the reread may wait 1-2 more years, until the damned series is finished.
