"Perhaps the leading organization to address this gap is the Glenmary Research Center, which publishes Religious Congregations and Membership in the United States, 2000."

The color contrast between the methodist map and the baptist map is histerical. methodist = green, baptist = red... I love it.

methodist green and baptist red; so even separated religous followers come together to have the map be Christmans colors

That's definitely interesting, but seems misleading. You might get the impression that North Dakota is as intensely religious as Utah, which most people familiar with both areas would agree isn't true except in the one way this map measures, namely the percentage of people who identify as a member of one of the 149 participating religious groups. When you consider that some of those northern counties have fewer than 1000 residents, the 75%+ doesn't seem as impressive.

Also, my experience has been that greater Oregon is a lot more religious than what's shown.. from this map it looks like the most godless state in the US (when in fact it's really just Portland).

Utah isn't exactly High Density.

yeah, percentages+populations would be better.

I'm not necessarily sure that the Glenmary people are really a reliable source. They're not exactly impartial.

Also, I think they got the name of my church wrong. We are Unitarian Universalists, not just Unitarians. Unless they only counted Unitarians, which isn't really a useful thing to count right now.

Well, I suspect their methods of gathering data, self-reporting churches, but it's still interesting.

The city right next to Eugene (I forget the name) is your stereotypical hickville.

This map of church domination is curious. It claims that, outside the south, Utah and part of the midwest the Catholic church claims over 50% of the population. That is true of this area as well. I've met very, very few Catholics in Seattle; I know they exist, but I am pretty damned sure that they don't have fifty percent of the population!

In addition to the challenges of trusting numbers from the churches themselves there is also the fact that this only accounts for large national denominations. Smaller denominations, even though they may be very similar in beliefs (such as "Christian") aren't going to be accounted for.

Or maybe I'm reading it wrong? Because that seems to contradict the data found in this map specific to the Catholic church.

ok, another person on my list finally explained this: it's only 50% if there is a black dot in the county. Otherwise it is just the "majority" religion.

That makes more sense. Still, though: unless Catholics are really quiet about their faith, I'd expect to see more evidence of them. Given that this data is put out by the catholic church and given that it is positioned with an interest/need for missionary work, I am curious how strong of an impact the bias has. e.g., how many non-catholic churches are giving the catholic church accurate data (or data at all) on their congregation.
