Hippies are people who think the law or "the man" oppresses them, and then are shocked and appalled to find out that this is indeed the case. (eg when they get arrested for being in a large group breaking laws)
"The term "hippie" has also been used in a derogatory sense, to describe long-haired unkempt drug users, who by beatnik standards was someone that was not "Hip" or "aware" or "clever" enough to really be "hip". Conservatives of the time (until recently) used the term "hippie" as an insult towards young liberals, though this use has declined (perhaps due to the conservative affiliation of aging hippies, or "yuppies"). To add to the confusion, many so-called hippies preferred to call themselves "freaks"."
and a lot of freaks get called hippies because people can't tell the fucking difference. how do i know this? because i lived in Hawaii and we have "hippies" there, and people would call my friends and i "hippies" just because we dressed differently from the norm (more of a punk/pierced look), though we didn't look the part of the other "hippies".
the other original meaning behind the word "hippie" referred to the low-slung pants that those now-yuppies slugged around in, that just barely held onto their hips. thus, "hippie". how do i know this? because my mom lived through that era and wore such pants.
explain to me the origin of "hip" in reference to being "in the know" of something or how it relates to something being positive from that particular cultural standpoint.
