hmmm

You know, if any guy I was dating seriously actually fucking called up my father to ask his fucking permission to marry me, I'd totally have to pawn the ring.

I get along with my father fine, although I wouldn't say I "respect" or even "talk" to him. The idea that my father owns me, at age 27+, is just fucking ridiculous.

I think it's not really an "owning" thing, it's more of an "ask for your blessing" thing these days, right?

[identity profile] herbaliser.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
or more of a "will you please pay for this wedding" thing

[identity profile] prettykate.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah, that too!

BOTH of her parents

[identity profile] skipbreakfast.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Good point. Wouldn't it be funny if somebody you weren't dating asked your dad? You know, just for shits and grins?

[identity profile] herbaliser.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah cos like, how'd he find their unlisted number?

[identity profile] skipbreakfast.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Even stranger!

[identity profile] amandasan.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
to "ask permission" would not be cool. but to call the parent/s and just let them know might be sort of ok.
i'm also kind of weirded out by wedding invitations with the bride and groom's parents' names on them.

If any guy I was dating spent a couple grand on a stupid ring, I'd totally have to pawn it and buy myself a nice engagement stereo or perhaps engagement European vacation.

fo' shizzle

except i'd feel bad and get a cheaper knockoff too.

Jason asked my dad, but it was more for show since he had already asked me and mom knew. It was going to happen whether he said "yes" or not, really. He just decided to ask dad since I have kind of a...special situation considering dad's age and all.
