tourism

Us european backpackers were always told "Don't wear shorts or tennis shoes or you'll look like a tourist." This is assuming that you didn't want to be pegged immediately. But frankly, Europe is not warm like the US is warm, at least not as early in the year. Moving to Seattle this makes much more sense. In May 2001, the weather here was comparable to the weather in Germany and such. Some nice days, but not many. So it doesn't really make sense to wear shorts or non-watertight shoes.

But now I wonder: what do Europeans wear when they visit DC/Disneyland/world/NYC in August and such?

italy in the summer, although totally worth it, can be hotter than hell.

i've heard croatia is fabulous.

I am not European but this is what I would wear:

layers, cottons, dressy flats that are not tennis shoes, leather sandals, skirts, thin pants.

Let me know when you'll be in NY / Boston.

There is this really overpriced sushi place in DC called "OYA" that I loved because it was so beautifully decorated. Maybe if you're feeling extravagant or have a wealthy relative you can go there?

Dood I totally recognize the guy in that icon. I can't recall his name though. I bet you he is an excellent lover. I mean he is so adventuresome in real life why not in the sack right?

Maybe, although I do live in Seattle, which has pretty decent sushi. We're mostly going to be around Williamsburg, maybe Virginia Beach.

Europeans seem to wear sandals and trainers, but they seem just a bit more chic (and sometimes a little more space-agey) than what we Americans have going on.

from working hotels i can tell you the germans in particular favor very loud, brightly colored synthetic clothing. and the women lean towards thin tank-tops, braless. the men, t-shirts. They really enjoy the plum-smuggler bathing suits, too. this describes at least 80% of german tourists I met.
