Reg's computer has pissed itself again, so he's upset, and when he's upset, I get upset. And when I get upset, Mr. Bigglesworth gets upset.

I think I may just have to swap its guts with my old machine. I have been avoiding helping him with his computer because, well, I hate fixing computers, but this shit has been going on for a year.

edit: after discussing symptoms with [livejournal.com profile] jimbojones we're guessing it's faulty memory, so I'm gonna run a memcheck to see if so.

does he pour coke into it or something? how does it keep getting hosed?

[identity profile] herbaliser.livejournal.com 2005-05-25 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
i suspect it's viruses... he boots up and his computer freezes on him
really, i have no idea.

I might have a solution to that. I had the same thing going on and had to fry that virus (Dr Watson Postmortem Debugger...) I can take a look if you want?

I just don't understand how people still get viruses in this day and age.

[identity profile] herbaliser.livejournal.com 2005-05-25 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it started with Kazaa.

[identity profile] henry.livejournal.com 2005-05-25 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)

Reinstall that shit. I have Windows 2000 disks all over my apartment, and I can probably come up with a Windows XP Professional CD as well you guys can have.

Then get the boy a virus-scanner and some anti-spyware shit. And a beating for not having that stuff already. :)

I'm out of town, or I'd offer to help now, but when I get back I can hook ya'llz up with some softs if you like.

We had the same thing happen when we put XP Pro on this system. I think what happened was the hard drive wasn't completely wiped when we tried to reinstall. I don't know if you're using the upgrade or the full edition, though. Once we fireballed everything related to Windows off and started clean, everything ran like a dream. We also use the shit out of McAffe, haven't had any crooked shit happen in ages. *knocks on computer table*

you kids are cool, so i'm tossing my hat into the ring with an offer to help, too.

i have all sorts of software and techy type tools... but you'll need a copy of some sort of antivirus program if you don't have one.

i HIGHLY recommend the latest norton.

the AV software and a broadband connection, about a days worth of time and i'll have that thing hummin' right along.

i'll do it for beer and a couple of sandwiches, as long as you and reg hang out and entertain me with your witty and jovial conversation.

Please keep in mind that jimbojones is a cunt. :-)

On the one occasion when I had an XP installation eat all kinds of ultra-weird shit, it *WAS* the memory. But no memory test would catch it.
I took the machine back to the dealer, and for a test (he had a good guess it was the ram) he simply replaced the SIMM. Ran like a charm. THAT IS THE BEST TEST. If your ram is compatible with his, power down your machine, and move a simm. Then boot.
