I don't believe in unconditional love. To me loving someone without any conditions at all is similar to liking a band or um say director even after they "sold out." On the one hand, I don't actually believe in selling out per se, unless you happen to be Liz Phair or Weezer*. On the other hand, your fans are the reason you have any money at all, and they like what you produce, so don't change dammit. Granted sometimes you already liked the style they changed into, like when U2 got all techno-ish, so it's no big deal. But there's very few bands or people that are so great that no matter what genre they touch, it's golden.


*Or George Lucas.

hmm. I have to disagree that an artist changing genres is the same as selling out. when you start restricting artists to only the genres they've been successful in, they'll start doing it not for the love of creating music, but because they want to make money, which is what I feel is the definition of selling out (doing something *purely* for the profit).

that's part of the reason i wish there was a greater split between fame, art, and tons of money. people should be allowed to experiment in their art, and grow as people and artists. i'll grant them that. that makes sense. but then you'd see art as more of a "hobby" than a "career." in which case, where do the multimillion dollar label deals fit in? sometimes i think there should be a huge change in the music industry, but i'm not sure what. something akin to what should change in the sports industry, i reckon. people don't get a million dollars knitting sweaters, but at least the sweaters keep you warm.
