I really must recommend Shadow of the Wind. boyfriend's review: "It's vast in its sensibility but incredibly close and enveloping in its feel, drawing readers in with a style that is somehow shockingly stark as well as impossibly rich, the language a mixture of the contemporary and the semi-baroque. It's set in Spain and Paris during the period from the 1920's through the 1950's. It's the best Gothic written since 1900 I've read in years. It's maaaagic."
