Reg's brief account.

There was a huge misunderstanding after I called Reg up and asked if he thought we should get married for tax reasons, he said he'd have to think about it, and I heard NO and cried and sniffled the whole rest of the work day, and I didn't want to go home, and I finally did, and he told me I was silly, and there's no other person he could possibly imagine marrying, and he thought I didn't care but he felt we were already married. And if it really mattered we could go to the courthouse this week, but I don't think that's necessary. So um, you should REALLY come to Decibel Festival, is all I will say right now.

(There are no rings: Reg might get me a computer, I might get him a tattoo.)

Saw it on fb and wondered if this was for real. Congratulations...? (How does it help you for taxes? Usually marriage is worse for taxes...)

I met a couple who got married at a local bdsm event, kind of on the spur of the moment. That's hard to top.

The marriage penalty only applies if both couples make a similar amount of money, as far as I can tell. At the moment Reg is an apprentice and therefore doesn't have a paystub to file taxes upon. Therefore the income as a couple would be mine, so the savings would actually be a great deal.

general rule is it's better for taxes if only one spouse is working, worse for taxes if both work.

Hey that is kind of cool.
I have these family friends... they were together like... fifteen years and they decided to get married when the wife's sister pointed out that their taxes would be lower. So they had friends over, got a keg, in the middle of the party they got married. (the guy that married them had just split up with his wife, so his pre-amble was kind of bitter, but it was funny. He agreed to marry them if the husband of the couple would fix his truck. Fair trade.) They've been legally married for about... 35 years.

Getting married makes your deductible actually less than being single and filing separately, so it's worse for taxes. Plus, no one would want that to be the reason why they get married, it's supposed to be charming and romantic, right?

it's not really about whether the amount of money matches, but how much it is altogether. tax brackets are higher for married people because your income is considered together.

This. Depressingly many dual-income families don't actually make enough to jump tax brackets enough to really hurt them if they file jointly. If you're NOT dual-income, then it's an unmitigated win - basically the unemployed or nearly-unemployed spouse ends up being a free dependent.

Also, OMGHOLYSHITLAURALCONGRATS! ^_^
